The counseling careers in this article include art, music, dance, and horticultural therapy. All are gaining ground in the field of human behavior and the treatment of mental illness (or simply coping with the stress of everyday life). These therapy jobs in psychology are relatively new ways of treating psychological disorders. Alone, they may not "cure" schizophrenia, depression, or phobias, but they can help people cope more effectively.

Counseling Careers and Therapy Jobs in PsychologyThe training for each of these disciplines is different, and depends on the type of therapy or counseling.

Art Therapy. Art therapists recognize that making art – painting, drawing, sculpting – enhances recovery from psychological disorders and improves overall health and wellness. Children’s art reflects their development and cognitive growth.

Music Therapy. Music therapists use instruments and songs to make progress with people who are bereaved, emotionally unstable, or recovering from various physical problems, such as stroke or cancer. It’s a therapy job in psychology that’s a little more established than horticultural therapy or dance therapy.

Dance Therapy. Movement or dance therapists focus on helping people improve their self-esteem and body image. Movement therapists offer insight into patterns of human behavior and create new ways to cope with psychological problems.

Horticultural Therapy. This is a new therapy job in psychology. Horticultural therapy focuses on the therapeutic benefits of garden environments. Gardens may help people with psychological disorders and mental illnesses – and perhaps even help cure them. Horticultural therapists use plants and the natural world to improve the well-being of people with psychological disorders or less complicated adjustment problems.
